Screening tests aim to detect disease in its early stages, before symptoms appear. Unfortunately, there is currently no recommended screening test for ovarian cancer in women at average risk. However, for those at high risk due to factors like BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, periodic testing, including CA 125 blood tests, may be advised. It’s crucial to note that while the CA 125 test measures levels of a protein associated with
ovarian cancer, it has limitations in detecting the disease early and can yield both false negative and false-positive results. Ongoing research seeks to develop more accurate and reliable screening methods for ovarian cancer.
